I am not sure what you are trying to say. Is it a sham to be web designer or a designer doing web design?

Huh?

Not at all.
But the minute you mention it, someone's going to tell you about how they need a website as well and "maybe we should have a chat, I have made some layouts in Photoshop for it already, I just need someone to put it all together in flash or something, I don't have any money though, but it'll be good exposure for you, oh and can you get a server for me and sort out my email when you do it, and i need an FTp area as well and can I stream music from the site..."

Seriously, if I got a pound for every time that's happened, I could go buy lunch now.

It never fails!
Whenever I'm hanging out with people that are not in this line of work, I inevitably get asked to help them log in to their ICQ or Skype accounts, make their band a website or more recently, am asked to explain how to download music and/or movies from the Internet.

Not that I mind terribly, it's just funny how you end up being the village IT department all the time.

I think this is only rivalled by photography:

'What do you do?'

'I'm a photographer'

'I'm also a photographer, I have a Nikon D40 with a 80-200mm f5.6-f7 AFS-IPO-DFN and a 10-24mm f4-5.6 AFD-IPOD-JSKS....What camera do you have?'

or

'You're a photographer? My daughter is getting married and she has spent so much on the dress and the venue and so on but really wants some amazing photographs. Do you think you could do it, it would be really good exposure for you and we'd let you use the pictures'.
